RCMP investigating murder of B.C. woman
Wed, December 05 2001

The CBC's Fifth Estate has learned the RCMP has launched an investigation into the killing of a young Lower Mainland woman in India 18 months ago.

Jassi Sidhu of Maple Ridge had married a man for love – a man her mother and uncle believed to be far beneath her station in life.

Her murderers lay in wait on a road in the Punjab for the young Canadian woman and her husband. He was left for dead. She was kidnapped.

Indian police say she phoned her mother in Canada and begged for her life. Her body was found the next morning lying in a ditch.

Indian police allege it was a contract killing. They have charged almost a dozen men, most of whom they say have now confessed they did the murder for $40,000.

The Fifth Estate says Indian police have phone records of over 30 calls to the alleged killers from a number that matches that of Jassi Sidhu's uncle in Canada.

Yet although the victim's s mother and her uncle, Surgit Singh Badesha, are considered fugitives from Indian law, they have not been extradited. The RCMP had said they have no jurisdiction over a murder in India.

Now, the Fifth Estate says the RCMP have launched their own investigation under a section of the criminal code "conspiracy to commit murder."
